When to Choose Semi-Custom vs Custom Cabinets

When it comes to cabinetry, there’s more than meets the eye. In my world of design, I guide clients through two primary options: semi-custom cabinets and full-custom cabinets. Each one serves a unique purpose depending on the needs of the project, the level of personalization desired, and, of course, the budget. Let’s start with the basics, Cabient Design 101: semi-custom vs custom cabinets explained in simple terms.

Cabinetry is not just a key design element in a kitchen or built-in space. The cabinetry is a key budget element, too.  It supports the appliances and the countertops, defines space, provides function, and reflects the lifestyle of the people who live there. I am sure you can see why understanding cabinetry options is so important.

What is The Difference in Cabinetry?

If you’ve read my previous post, Good, Better, and Best: Understanding the Differences in Cabinetry, you’re already familiar with the different types of cabinets available. Today, I want to focus on how to decide if semi-custom will suit your needs or if full-custom cabinetry is the way to go.

Why Semi-Custom Works for Many Projects

Let’s start with semi-custom. This is a great solution when you want size flexibility and finish options at a better price. Semi-custom cabinetry allows for size adjustments, meaning you can modify the height, width, and depth of a cabinet. You can request special features like pipe chases or corner cutouts. While you cannot design your doors and moldings, there are options to create a design tailored to your look.

Most manufacturers offer a range of door styles and finishes, including paint and stain options, which is helpful when you’re designing a whole home environment.  Crown moldings, interior accessories like spice pullouts or tray dividers, and even custom color matches may be available, depending on the company.

There are limitations to what the manufacturer will offer. The core structure of the cabinets and the way they’re manufactured stay within certain parameters. That’s part of what keeps semi-custom cabinetry more cost-effective and generally quicker to produce. Many semi-custom cabinet manufacturers do not make their doors but purchase them to be finished in-house.

When to Choose Semi-Custom Cabinetry.

Semi-custom cabinetry works beautifully for kitchens, laundry rooms, mudrooms, and bathrooms where you want something that feels polished but doesn’t need every detail engineered from scratch.

For newer designers, it’s a smart entry point because it allows you to develop your understanding of space planning and detailing while staying within an established system. For homeowners, it often strikes a balance between beauty, function, and budget.

What Makes Custom Cabinets Different?

When your project calls for something truly unique that demands a tailored solution, then the answer is custom cabinetry.

When the details demand custom cabinetry.

Full custom doesn’t just mean “expensive” or “high-end.” It means control. You can design any size or shape. You’re not confined by catalog limitations. You can specify custom door styles, one-of-a-kind finishes, and creative construction techniques. You can select or even design the hardware. Many custom manufacturers will build their doors in-house, offering more detailed customization.

When designing for function and aesthetics, custom cabinetry allows for the flexibility to design exactly what you need. Custom solutions allow for detailed interior configurations, hidden power stations, custom-designed hoods, and unique design solutions.

Interior Craftsmanship and Material Options

Even though many custom shops source their dovetail drawer boxes (typically maple or walnut), you still have options. European-style aluminum drawer boxes are becoming more popular for their sleek functionality. (These drawers are showing up in semi-custom cabinets as well.)

Materials can also go far beyond wood. Leather, hide, fabric, glass, and specialty metal inlays can be integrated into doors and panels. You can bring your design vision to life with the options custom cabinets offer.

Ultra Custom: The Highest Level of Cabinet Design

There’s a tier of cabinet design that goes even further. You may have heard the term “Bench Built.” This is what I call ultra-custom cabinetry—where design becomes a fully immersive experience. If you dream it, they can build it. The focus is on high-quality materials and craftsmanship, which can be lost in a larger manufacturing environment.

You can customize everything from the thickness of your door profiles to the very wood species used in your veneers. I’ve worked on projects where clients selected their logs, which would be sliced into matched veneer patterns for their cabinet doors. This highly custom approach is the epitome of expressing personal taste and style. This level of work is often reserved for luxury home design/build projects where the result is unmatched individuality.

How to Choose: Semi-Custom or Custom?

There’s no universal answer. Choosing the right cabinetry depends on several key factors:

Budget: Semi-custom offers flexibility and beauty within a defined range. Full custom (and ultra-custom) will cost more but deliver unmatched design options.

Functionality: If your design requires specific sizes, shapes, or features, full customization may be the best choice.

Timeline: Semi-custom cabinets generally require a shorter production time.  Custom cabinets generally take longer to build and finish. The design time for a full custom kitchen is often longer, depending on the level of detail and customization.

Design Intent: The level of customization and detail the client and the design require will determine the best choice for the cabinets used in the project.

Choose What Works for You.

Whether you choose custom or semi-custom cabinetry, the key is selecting cabinetry that aligns with the way you live and the story you want your space to tell. Regardless of the label, the final design and installation is a world of choices, details, and craftsmanship that shapes your home. What is your go-to cabinet type?
