Remodeling Hints

Thyme & Place Design has been creating kitchens and baths for 25 years. During this time, we've acquired a kitchen-cabinet full of tips to help you handle the inevitable disruptions.

In the weeks before the work begins, keep a list of all those restaurants you’ve been meaning to try. When the microwave gets old, your list will come in handy for a quick escape!

Pack up the kitchen or bathroom well before the remodeling begins. While it’s a great time to “spring clean” your cabinets and shelves, don’t forget to clearly label the storage boxes. This will make the unpacking process a lot easier; the happy result is a quick move-in when your beautiful new space is finished. Items that are fragile should be marked accordingly and stored in an area away from the construction.

Designate a space outside of the area where the remodeling is being done to act as your temporary kitchen. The dining room can be a good choice – especially if a powder room is close by.

Don’t forget...

  • The fridge! If your current fridge isn't moveable, an inexpensive dorm-size refrigerator may do the trick.
  • You may be able to temporarily move everything you need…except the kitchen sink! Consider where your “water source” will be in relation to your temporary kitchen.
  • Microwave (and a freezer stocked with microwavable meals!)
  • Make family favorites and throw them in the freezer.  We promise you…you’ll thank yourself later!
  • Coffee maker (filters and coffee, too!)
  • Disposable utensils and plates
  • Utility utensils, such as can opener, bottle/wine opener, sharp knives, and microwavable dishes
  • Toaster or toaster oven – a slow cooker is also a good choice.
  • Keep the basics handy: butter, salt & pepper, favorite spices
  • Dining area/table - no matter how quickly your project progresses, eating off your lap gets old really fast.
  • Cleaning supplies and dishtowels

Don’t forget about your pets. If there isn’t an area in your home to keep them safely away from construction, especially during certain phases, this may be the perfect time to treat your pets to a vacation at the kennel or a long play date at a friend’s home.

Decide in advance where you’d like the installers to store their tools.

Dust…there’s just no way to avoid it!

If there is a fish tank or electrical equipment in close proximity to the work – remember to keep them well covered!
